Distribution of cultures


Bacterial isolates/strains will be properly packaged and shipped from the NRAMRB Laboratory, ICMR-NIRBI, Kolkata to researchers within India. Each shipment should include proper documentation and adhere to the shipping guidelines.


Terms and condition for Distribution of cultures
  • The isolated bacterial strains will be shipped to researchers as stab culture in semi-solid nutrient agar in ambient temperature.
  • Each stab culture will be properly labelled mentioning the AMR ID and name of the organism.
  • Before packaging, proper growth and viability of the isolate will be ensured.
  • Information related to the bacterial strains will be available on the ICMR-NIRBI web portal (under Catalogue).
  • A product sheet (in a properly sealed plastic pouch) will contain detailed information on the handling of materials, as well as ideal growth and propagation conditions.
  • Triple Layer Packaging guidelines of United Nations Model Regulations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods will be complied (see Annexure I).
  • For transport, the mark illustrated below shall be displayed on the external surface of the outer packaging on background of a contrasting colour and shall be clearly visible and legible. The mark shall be in the form of a square set at an angle of 45° (diamond-shaped) with each side having a length of at least 50 mm; the width of the line shall be at least 2 mm and the letters and numbers shall be at least 6 mm high. The proper shipping name “BIOLOGICAL SUBSTANCE, CATEGORY B” in letters at least 6 mm high shall be marked on the outer packaging adjacent to the diamond-shaped mark.
  • The UN category number of infectious substances will be mentioned.
  • Sender details i.e., Name, Designation, Department, Institute name, address, Fax, Email including emergency contact number will be given along with the packaging.
  • The cultures are preserved in NRAMRB Laboratory, ICMR-NIRBI by methods known to maintain the viability of strains for a long time. However, NRAMRB Laboratory ill not take any responsibility if a culture becomes non-viable or is destroyed during storage in the laboratory of requesting party or of any misuse or improper handling of cultures received.
  • Complaints about the cultures are entertained within one months of the receipt of the culture by the requesting party.
  • Request party should also fill up an online form “Online Culture Distribution”(see Annexure II) or This form should be uploaded during strain request.
  • A ‘Material Transfer Agreement’ (MTA) (see Annexure III) needs to be signed between the recipient and the NRAMRB Laboratory, ICMR-NIRBI before sending the strains. This form can be downloaded from the website.
  • The culture once received should be acknowledged.
  • Shipment will be done to the recipient as per their contact details given below.
  • NRAMRB Laboratory ICMR-NIRBI will avoid the shipment on weekends and public holidays to minimise shipment time and/or delay in receiving.
