Welcome to the official website of the National Repository of Antimicrobial-Resistant Bacteria (NRAMRB)

About Us

The National Repository of Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria (NRAMRB) is a pioneering initiative under the National Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Hub, established at ICMR-National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI) in 2019. Funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), this repository serves as a centralized facility dedicated to addressing the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across India.
NRAMRB houses well-characterized antimicrobial-resistant bacterial isolates collected from diverse regions and clinical specimens nationwide. This comprehensive repository is a vital resource for advancing research, accelerating the development of new antibiotics, therapeutics, and vaccines, and fostering innovative solutions to combat AMR.

About

The collection

The repository houses a diverse collection of antimicrobial-resistant Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella Typhi, Non-typhoidal Salmonella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Shigella spp, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium, and Enterococcus faecalis. Unlike traditional culture collections, this repository is uniquely dedicated to antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, serving as a specialized resource to support research, surveillance, and the development of new therapeutic strategies against drug-resistant infections.

Resources and support at NRAMRB

Culture Supply-NRAMRB offers a culture supply service, providing a catalogue of well-characterized antimicrobial-resistant strains. These archived strains are accessible to government agencies, academic institutions, clinical and commercial laboratories, public health institutions, pharmaceutical companies, biotech firms, and diagnostic companies. Researchers can request strains from the repository, with a nominal fee of ₹500/- for academic researchers and ₹3000/- for non-academic researchers per strain. This initiative ensures that high-quality reference strains are available to support research and innovation in antimicrobial resistance.

Culture Deposition -The repository also welcomes culture depositions, allowing researchers to contribute microbial strains along with relevant clinical data. Each strain undergoes thorough purity, viability, and identity checks before being preserved and characterized, with NIRBI serving as the custodian. There is no fee for depositing strains, and contributors receive official acknowledgment for their valuable contribution. This collaborative effort aims to strengthen the national AMR research infrastructure and foster knowledge-sharing within the scientific community.

Capacity Building -To enhance expertise in antimicrobial resistance, NRAMRB regularly organizes capacity-building programs, including hands-on training and workshops. These sessions, typically spanning two to three days, provide both theoretical insights and practical experience in AMR research and laboratory techniques. Through these initiatives, NRAMRB strives to equip researchers, healthcare professionals, and industry experts with the necessary skills to combat antimicrobial resistance effectively.
